Package Coalition Letter Urges Prompt Appointment of New PMG

Chair, Board of Governors
United States Postal Service

Washington, D.C. 20260

Dear Chair McReynolds,

I write on behalf of the Package Coalition, a diverse group of leading retail and ecommerce companies that invest in and rely upon on the postal system to provide affordable package delivery services to millions of Americans, to urge the United States Postal Service Board of Governors to expeditiously move forward with appointing the next Postmaster General. Indeed, having a new permanent Postmaster General in place in time for the upcoming National Postal Forum would be ideal, as the Forum provides the industry a unique opportunity to coalesce around a shared vision for a vibrant postal system.

The Package Coalition’s members are deeply committed to, and recognize the value of, the postal system as part of the nation’s critical economic, political, and social infrastructure. Given the Postal Service’s importance and its unique public service mission, it is essential the Board of Governors and the new Postmaster General take stock of what has and has not worked. From the perspective of the businesses who partner with and make significant long-term investments in the postal system, stability and predictability are foundational.

Congress entrusted the Board with the responsibility of hiring the Postmaster General. We recognize that there is no established timeline for the Board’s deliberation in selecting a new Postmaster General. But in the current environment and in view of recent uncertainty regarding the independence of the Postal Service, the Board’s prompt identification of a forward-looking and effective Postmaster General to chart a new path to lead the Postal Service into the future is essential. We are at an important inflection point for the future of the U.S. postal system and the Postal Service – strategically, financially and politically.

To the extent the Board’s deliberations envision engagement with businesses that use, partner with, and invest in the system, the Package Coalition’s members would be pleased to be a resource.

Thank you for considering our perspective.

Sincerely,

John McHugh
Chairman, Package Coalition
