Washington, D.C. - Package Coalition Chairman John McHugh issued the following statement today in response to the Introduction of the HEROES Act by the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill would provide $25 billion in emergency relief for the United States Postal Service (USPS), ensures no harmful conditions are attached to any needed borrowing, and reaffirms that postal workers provide an essential service.
“Throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic, USPS has continued to deliver prescription medications to seniors, to provide one of the few means of commerce for small businesses and to protect Americans’ access to essential goods including food and household supplies. Its services are especially critical for rural Americans who, absent USPS, would be forced to pay rates prices for private delivery services. It is imperative that USPS continues to operate at full tilt to keep our economy going.
“Now is the wrong time to impose a package tax. Forcing the Postal Service to raise prices will not help the Postal Service and will harm millions of American small businesses and consumers, especially seniors and rural Americans who are relying on the Postal Service for mail-order medicines and other essential household items during this crisis.”
